PDF became an open standard on July 1st, 2008. Since then many free and feature rich application have become available on Linux. XPDF and KPDF are commonly used. You should should be able to install these easily using your package manager.

This is a powerful and important paper. I briefly discuss its relevance here:

While preferring to read Libertarian Papers in HTML on a Linux PC, kdejager's difficulties with PDF and DOC formats might be solved by software. Sun Open Office is
free Linux software that reads DOC files, if a little slowly, and Adobe's free PDF Reader for Linux loads just as fast as its Windows implementation.

Thanks. But we do not intend to publish in HTML format. You are of course free to use one of the several tools you mention to convert it to some other format.

Dear Editor,

On my first visit to libertarianpapers.org, I am disappointed that I will not read your content because is not available in html.

PDF is suitable only for docs intended for actual printed pages. A good rant is at: http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20030714.html.

MS-Word has a history of security vulnerabilities, and (unlike MS IE) MSWord has poor patch management. I tell my friends (whose PCs I support) not to click a Word doc on the Internet.

Neither .pdf nor .doc works well on Linux. When your authors submit a Word doc, there are several tools that can convert it to html (including Word, if you're willing to tweak the appearance).

Otherwise, Good Luck in your new publishing adventure!
